Making a Bibliography

The proper form for bibliographies is important in a research report.  As styles for citing electronic works, such as CD-ROMs and information taken from the internet, are evolving, these examples might be revised over the year.  If  you don't find the example you need, take a look at the next higher grade level.

Book Entry:

  • Author Name.
  • Book Title. - underflined

Article from a Print Encyclopedia/Reference Book:

  • Name of Subject.

Third Grade Bibliography Formats:
Follow the punctuation in the examples exactly
Be sure to put the author's last name before the first name, with the two names separated by a comma (Doe, Jane.)
If you look up information about a person in an encyclopedia, that person's name should also be written last name first
If you cannot find some information, such as author, just leave it out.

Fifth Grade Bibliography Formats:
For each source listed, begin first line at margin and indent each line that follows.
Underline or use italics for titles of books, periodicals and software.  Titles of articles are enclosed in quotation marks.
Note punctuation and follow exactly.
If required information, such as author or place of publication, is not available, just leave it out.
Arrange all sources in one list, alphabetically by first word, which will generally be either the author's last name or the first important word of the title.
